History of the Davis Original Free Will Baptist Church

In 1878, the first recorded representation of the second church in Davis was documented in the archives of the Free Will Baptist denomination. The name of the church was the Davis Free Will Baptist Church. All entities of the North Carolina Free Will Baptist denomination were supported and the church grew and prospered in the Lord for many years.

Some eighty years later, after much discussion, deliberation, and anxiety a vote was taken to determine if the church wanted to continue to financially support some or all entities of the North Carolina Free Will Baptist denomination. As a result of the vote, the body of the church divided. Some wanted to support all aspects of the denomination and some did not. After a court case and a judge’s ruling, the Davis Original Free Will Baptist Church launched out with faith in God. This body of believers, which supports all denomination entities, began to worship together in the old Davis schoolhouse.

On August 11, 1968, the church obtained a parcel of land from Mr. & Mrs. Joe Williams for the purpose of building a new sanctuary. The ground-breaking service for the new church building was held on September 22, 1968. The Reverend R. H. Jackson presided over the service. The motto for the new church was We Will Rise Up and Build. Roland Lawrence Construction Company began working on the new building on September 28, 1968. Three years later on the fifth Sunday in April (1973), a burning of the mortgage service was held. The church was free and clear of all debt. God had surely blessed the people. A year later, new carpet purchased by the Ladies Auxiliary was installed in the sanctuary and on October 18, 1977, the steeple was erected on the church. A year later on October 4, 1978, the church voted to erect a fellowship hall beside the sanctuary. Three years later a ground-breaking service was held and construction began. On January 24, 1982, the church purchased a parsonage from Mr. Bobby Dudley, Davis. In 1993 a handicap ramp was added to the church building. On January 6, 1994, the last payment was made on the parsonage. After years of wear and tear, a new steeple was constructed by the gentlemen of the Building Committee and was placed on the church on May 28, 1994.

Each aspect of construction was completed, each financial debt was met, and each building and items on the grounds have been dedicated to the service of the Lord. We know that without the prayers and hard work of all the people, none of this would have happened. BUT, most of all we know and believe with all our hearts that God Almighty has been with us through it all. We pray that He will continually guide us in all we do at the Davis Original Free Will Baptist Church.
