When the church was organized in 1883 the community was known as Springfield officially and Upper Smyrna locally. The name Williston came when the post office was established in 1906. Elijah M. Willis is credited with suggesting that the community be called Williston in honor of its first settler. His reason was that Davis Shore was to get a post office and it was to be henceforth called Davis in honor of that community’s first settlers.
The 1950’s era picture was made at a gathering in the assembly hall of the Williston church. Those pictured are Rev. D. M. Tyson a beloved pastor who served in many ways (food in this instance), Gerald Willis and in the background on the right leaning is Charles Piner. In the far back is probably Irdell Willis. The others are unidentified.
