    Run Boat "Genevieve"

“This is an old photo I found of a buy boat or run boat “Genevieve“ of Clayton Fulcher Seafood Co.. In the late 40’s my father Edwin Daniels worked for Clayton. He would run the Genevieve to Ocracoke Island from Atlantic N.C. to buy fish and transport them back to the market at Atlantic. He would often stop by Portsmouth Island. Mr. Henry would pole his skiff out to pick up supplies or folks that had hitched a ride. The holds of the Genevieve were filled with ice, so when someone from Portsmouth died on the mainland and wanted to be laid to rest on Portsmouth Island, he would transport the deceased and the family back to Portsmouth. They would load the casket on Henry’s skiff. Sometimes folks who died on Portsmouth would be transported back to the mainland to be buried). Dad would continue on to Ocracoke and soon return to Portsmouth to pick up the family and take them back to Atlantic. My grandfather Arlie Daniels was hired as a cook at the lifesaving station. The summer kitchen was his for a couple years in the late 1930’s."

Thank you to Ricky Daniels for providing us with this photo and the story that goes with it!
